Redefining Masculinity and Disability For A New Era.
In a powerful clip, Jason Wilson highlights how society’s narrow definitions of masculinity often leave men feeling banned from being human. For men with disabilities, this struggle is amplified, as societal expectations limit their autonomy and perpetuate one-dimensional definitions within the realms of protection, provision, and performance.

Navigating the Alien Experience:
Living with a disability is often described as an alienating experience — one marked by isolation, misunderstanding, and the constant feeling of being different. Society’s expectations seem to dictate that those with disabilities should be taken care of rather than empowered, creating a sense of being banned from fully expressing their humanity.
Overcoming Overcompensation:
Men with disabilities face the added pressure of overcompensating to meet societal standards of masculinity. Within the three Ps — protect, provide, and perform — there exists a one-dimensional understanding, leaving little room for the diverse ways individuals can embody these roles.
Challenging the Norms:
Physical strength and financial provision are dominant definitions within these roles. However, real vulnerability can exist regardless of physical prowess, and the statistics on disability employment underline the elusive nature of providing financially. Only 22.9% of people with disabilities aged 16 and above made up the labor population in November 2023. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/odep/research-evaluation/statistics
Creating Change:
To break free from these constraints, men with disabilities need a supportive community and a safe space to share their experiences. True change must start within each man, fostering a sense of purpose beyond societal labels. By encouraging a broader understanding of masculinity and promoting inclusivity, we can dismantle the barriers that prevent men with disabilities from embracing their full human expression.
